Westbourne Homes - Modern Country Living Through Botanical Design
Modern Country Living in Contemporary Residential Design
Over the past few years, Design by Nature has had the pleasure of working closely with property developers Westbourne Homes, developing dried botanical arrangements for a series of their residential projects across Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Known for their thoughtful approach to new-build homes, Westbourne Homes create interiors that capture the warmth and character of traditional English country houses while embracing a more contemporary way of living.
These homes feel considered rather than styled, elegant but not formal, layered without excess. Natural materials, soft colour palettes, and a sense of ease run through each interior, creating spaces that feel immediately welcoming. It’s an approach often described as modern country living: a style that honours heritage while quietly updating it for modern life.
This sensibility is not unique to the English countryside. Similar aesthetics can be found across contemporary American interiors, where styles such as modern farmhouse, organic modern, and refined rustic have become increasingly prevalent. At their core, these interiors share the same values warmth, authenticity, restraint, and a connection to nature making them a natural context for dried botanical work.

Bringing the Landscape into the Home Through Botanical Design
Working alongside Westbourne Homes’ interior design team, Design by Nature has developed a series of dried botanical arrangements and vase displays designed to bring a subtle sense of the surrounding landscape into each home. Rather than acting as decorative flourishes, the arrangements are intended to feel quietly embedded within the interior, part of the atmosphere rather than an afterthought.
The compositions are intentionally relaxed and naturalistic. Stems are allowed to move freely, forms remain slightly irregular, and colour palettes are drawn from the tones of the countryside itself , muted greens, softened neutrals, and gently weathered hues. This approach mirrors the landscapes surrounding many of the properties: hedgerows, fields, and gardens that shift subtly with the seasons rather than presenting themselves in rigid order. This natural looseness allows the botanicals to sit comfortably alongside timber, stone, linen, and plaster finishes, supporting the interior rather than competing with it.

Longevity and Dried Botanicals in Property Development
Longevity is a key consideration when working with property developers, and dried botanicals offer a practical as well as aesthetic solution. Our arrangements are designed to remain in situ throughout viewings and marketing periods, maintaining their form and presence without the need for regular replacement or maintenance.
This durability is particularly valuable in show homes, where consistency and quality must be upheld over extended periods. In many cases, the arrangements remain with the property beyond sale, becoming part of the home’s story and offering new owners a sense of continuity rather than a temporary styling gesture.
The idea that florals can transition seamlessly from marketing tool to lived object reflects a broader shift in how we think about interiors. Favouring pieces that endure, adapt, and age gracefully rather than those designed for short-term impact.

Modern Country Interiors and American Design Parallels
What makes this collaboration especially compelling is how easily it resonates beyond its immediate setting. While rooted in the English countryside, the interiors created by Westbourne Homes speak to a broader, international appreciation for spaces that feel grounded, natural, and thoughtfully composed.
In the United States, similar interiors are celebrated for their balance of tradition and modernity — homes that feel comfortable yet refined, organic yet intentional. The dried botanical arrangements developed for these projects could sit just as naturally within a contemporary farmhouse in New England or a softly styled rural home in California as they do in Buckinghamshire or Oxfordshire.
This shared design language underscores the versatility of dried botanicals within residential interiors, particularly when approached with sensitivity and restraint.
A Shared Philosophy of Calm, Enduring Design
At the heart of our ongoing collaboration with Westbourne Homes is a shared understanding of what makes a space feel truly complete. Rather than relying on trend-led styling or overt statements, both practices prioritise atmosphere, materiality, and longevity.
Our work together reflects a belief that florals — like furniture, lighting, or art — should be considered as part of the interior from the outset. When designed thoughtfully, dried botanicals can contribute depth, softness, and connection to nature, supporting the architecture and design rather than distracting from it.
As modern country living continues to evolve, this quiet, considered approach remains central, creating homes that feel timeless, welcoming, and deeply connected to their surroundings.
